Scope of the Position

Summary:

The Wastewater Technician is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the industrial wastewater treatment plant to ensure the safe, efficient, and economical treatment of wastewaters to meet the discharge permit limitations.

Responsibilities

Duties to be Performed:

  • Must be able to learn and understand wastewater processing equipment to meet all applicable to safety and regulatory requirements and in accordance with design criteria.
  • Supports emergency and unscheduled work to assure appropriate follow through
  • Complies with plant safety, quality and risk management programs for operators in accordance with plant policies, procedures, or requirements
  • Ensures task as assigned on the preventive maintenance program are completed and equipment repairs or replacement such that effluent quality limits are maintained
  • Performs routine laboratory analysis on the Wastewater Treatment Plant technology and provides support in gathering samples
  • Provides feedback on appropriate inventory of stored material for use
  • Must be able to control and clean up spills associated to the process.
  • Willing to learn forklift operations
  • Labels all incoming and outgoing chemicals
  • Completes required inspections and completes/signs Hazardous Waste manifests per DOT and RCRA training
  • Understands the requirement and use of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Must have good attendance and solid safety record
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, inspection, and installation of wastewater treatment plant components
  • Knowledge of the mechanical and chemical processes involved in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards in wastewater treatment plants and safety measures to be implemented
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment used in the wastewater treatment process
  • Ability to recognize needed repairs
  • Ability to perform, analyze, and interpret laboratory tests for the purpose of making operational adjustments
  • Ability to deal effectively with people at all levels
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.

Required Training and Experience:

This position requires at least 1-year experience in the operation and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant. Other combinations of experience and education, which provide the knowledge and skills required to perform the job, may be considered.  Desire to work towards Class C Wastewater Certification within 5 years.

Job Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Frequent horizontal reaching
  • Occasional overhead reaching, bending/squatting, twisting, simple grasping, firm/power gripping, fine manipulation/pinch gripping
  • Frequent walking and climbing stairs and balancing slippery, narrow walkways (4’ above floor level)
  • Chemical exposure to hazardous materials
  • Frequent overhead reaching, bending, squatting and standing
  • Required Personal Protective Equipment: safety glasses, Kevlar or rubber gloves, ear protection, steel-toed shoes/boots, chemical suit and gloves
  • Near/Far Visual Acuity/ Color Vision / Depth Perception – inspection of product and ability to see others and for safety

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma or High School Equivalency.
  • Must be able to properly maintain records and/or reports
  • Must be able to communicate in English
